How Is a Handmade 3D iPhone Case Made? Inside PIECE MELD
Share
A PIECE MELD case doesn’t begin with a flat print.
It starts with individual pieces—metal details, chains, printed elements, resin and an empty phone case—brought together one by one by hand.
For RED TAKE, we combine record-inspired graphics, metal details, safety pins, chains and red accents to create a layered 3D punk iPhone case. Here’s a closer look at how it goes from an empty case to the finished piece.
1. Starting With the Case
Every PIECE MELD case begins with a check of the base case.
Before we add any decorative elements, we inspect the flexible TPU shell, edges, camera opening and surface to make sure everything is ready for assembly. Starting with a clean base is a small step, but it matters when every detail will eventually be assembled by hand.

2. Building the Design, Piece by Piece
This is where the character of the case begins to take shape.
Instead of printing one flat graphic onto the back of the case, the individual elements are positioned one by one. For RED TAKE, that includes record-inspired graphics, metal chains, safety pins, red accents and small layered details.
Their position, scale and relationship to each other are adjusted by hand until the composition feels balanced. That process is also where the name PIECE MELD comes from:
Pieces, melded into something new.

3. Mixing and Applying the Resin
Once the layout is ready, the resin is prepared slowly and carefully.
It is applied around the individual elements to help bring the different layers together and create the glossy, dimensional surface that gives the finished case its tactile 3D character.
This is one of the biggest differences between a PIECE MELD case and a simple 2D printed phone case: the details have real depth that you can see and feel.

4. Letting the Resin Set
After the first resin application, the case is placed in a protected container and left undisturbed for approximately two hours. This gives the resin time to settle before we inspect the surface again.
Handmade resin work takes time. Rushing the process can affect the final finish, so waiting is part of the making process too.
5. Checking the Surface and Tiny Bubbles
After the first resting period, we take a close look at the surface and remove visible bubbles where possible.
Because each case is assembled and finished by hand, tiny bubbles or slight differences in the placement of individual elements may occasionally remain. These small variations are part of the handmade process—and one of the reasons no two PIECE MELD cases are completely identical.

6. Curing for 24 Hours
The case is then covered and left to cure for approximately 24 hours. During this stage, the resin gradually hardens around the layered design.
For us, this is one of the least exciting parts to film—but one of the most important parts of the process. There is no shortcut here. We simply give the case the time it needs.
7. Final Inspection
Once the resin has cured, the case is taken out and checked again by hand.
We look over the decorative elements, resin surface, edges and overall finish before the case is fitted onto a phone. Small handmade variations are normal, but every finished case should still feel intentional and complete.

8. From Individual Pieces to the Finished Case
Once fitted onto the phone, all of the separate pieces finally come together.
Metal, chains, graphics, resin and small everyday objects become one finished design with real texture and depth.
Not a flat image.
Not a mass-printed surface.
Just different pieces, assembled and finished by hand.
That is the idea behind PIECE MELD.
Pieces, melded into something new.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are PIECE MELD cases printed?
Not in the traditional flat-print sense. Our designs combine layered graphics, resin, metal details, chains, charms and other 3D elements assembled by hand.
How long does it take to make a PIECE MELD case?
Most PIECE MELD cases require approximately two calendar days to make and prepare before shipping. The resin itself goes through several resting and curing stages during the process.
Are small bubbles normal in a handmade resin case?
Small bubbles or slight differences in placement may occasionally occur because every case is finished by hand. These variations do not affect normal use and make each piece slightly different.
Do PIECE MELD cases support wireless charging?
No. Because many PIECE MELD designs feature raised metal decorations on the back, they are not compatible with wireless charging. Use a charging cable while the case is on.
